The SDS-WAS Regional Center for Northern Africa, Middle East and Europe (hereafter RC) supports a model inter-comparison and forecast evaluation, which is based on data files daily exchanged by SDS-WAS partners. From now on we refer to these files as numerical predictions. The RC has implemented two types of services:

  • Public, providing access to numerical predictions aged more more than 2 days. Access requires previous registration, which can be requested by email (sdswas@aemet.es) or performed automatically when the option is available.

  • Restricted, providing access to all the numerical predictions available for re-distribution, including those aged less than 2 days. Access is normally limited to National Meteorological and Hydrological Services and other institutions contributing actively to the SDS-WAS. Public administrations, research and educational institutions are eligible to access these services in support of specific activities. Applications must be submitted by email (sdswas@aemet.es). They will be evaluated and answered within 30 days of the date of receipt.

Data policy

Commercial users will not have access to the restricted services. Their requests for the latest predictions shall be addressed to the following contacts:

HOW TO DOWNLOAD FILES?

Before downloading files, please register either by clicking on the "Register" link on top-right of the web page or going here. Automatic registration is temporally suspended. Please, email to sdswas@aemet.es to request your user id.

After registering, you can log into the portal and enter all repositories following the links above. In each repository you can find daily files, sorted by year and month. You may download a file by clicking on it, or files of a entire month or year (zipped) by clicking on the "(download all)" link on the right of the month or year.

Downloads can also be scheduled using routines or scripts. For example, you can use the "wget" command (by default in most of Linux/Unix distributions and also available for Windows), as follows:

  • For a single file
    • wget --http-user="YOUR_REGISTRATION_EMAIL" --http-password="YOUR_REGISTRATION_PASSWORD" --auth-no-challenge http://sds-was.aemet.es/forecast-products/dust-forecasts/files-download/MODEL_REPOSITORY/YYYY/MM/YYYYMMDDMODEL_NAME.nc
  • For an entire month
    • wget --http-user="YOUR_REGISTRATION_EMAIL" --http-password="YOUR_REGISTRATION_PASSWORD" --auth-no-challenge http://sds-was.aemet.es/forecast-products/dust-forecasts/files-download/MODEL_REPOSITORY/YYYY/MM/@@download -O FILENAME.zip
  • Tip to download the latest file:
    • wget --http-user="YOUR_REGISTRATION_EMAIL" --http-password="YOUR_REGISTRATION_PASSWORD" --auth-no-challenge http://sds-was.aemet.es/forecast-products/dust-forecasts/files-download/MODEL_REPOSITORY/latest/@@download -O FILENAME.zip

Please feel free to contact us in case of doubts or problems.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

Numerical dust forecasts are distributed in NetCDF format. This format was developed and is mantained at Unidata, part of the UCAR (U. S. University Corporation for Atmospheric Research). You can find all technical documentation here.

A list of all main software tools to manipulate and visualize NetCDF files can be found here.

DISCLAIMER

Neither the SDS-WAS partners nor the WMO SDS-WAS Regional Center can guarantee that the data are correct and available in all circumstances. They do not accept any liability whatsoever for any error or omission in the data, or for any loss or damage arising from its use.

DATA POLICY

The terms of usage of the data files stored on the servers of the RC are:

  • Products may not be used for commercial purposes.
  • Publications based on one or several individual models shall label the individual models and the WMO SDS-WAS programme, reference the models and offer co-authorship to the respective modelling groups (typically one author each) and to one of the WMO SDS-WAS coordination team members.
  • If the model results constitute only a minor part of a publication no co-authorship is required but the work shall be made available to the respective modelling groups before publication for commenting, these modelling groups shall be acknowledged and all models used in composites shall be referenced explicitly
  • Any author using WMO SDS-WAS model results shall notify the modellers of the citation once the paper is published.
  • Forwarding numerical predictions to third parties is not permitted.
